We
established Amarula Dorper Stud, in October 2000, with the
purchase of six purebred ewes from Western Australia. An extensive
embryo transfer program was then embarked upon. The stud now
has a base flock of 500 Type 5 and Type 4 ewes.
The top 5% of ewes are selected each year for ongoing
ET programs to continually strengthen the genetic
potency of the flock. Genetics from this program are made
available each year at our annual on property production sale
in February, Dubbo National Sale in September and by private
treaty. Click here

The interest in the Dorper
was sparked when visiting South Africa in 1999. Justin &
Lorroi saw Dorper ewes with lambs at foot in fat condition
running in a 250mm rainfall area, where they were grazing
on predominately shrubs and bushes. They believed if they
could survive under these conditions and do well the breed
would thrive in Australia.
They were impressed by the
hardiness and survivability of the Dorper as well as their
low maintenance. The Dorper has the ability to utilise poor
quality feed to rapidly gain weight. It can also adapt to
better quality feeding systems such as improved pastures and
feedlots due to its excellent feed conversion. The breed is
also highly fertile with multiple births prevalent. Amarula routinely gets lambing/weaning rates in thier stud (500 ewes) and there Commercial (1000 2nd, 3rd and 4th X Ewes) of 130% to 150%. Their polyoestrus (nonseasonal)
breeding ability enables the ewes to lamb three times in 2
years. They produce a large amount of milk and are very protective
mothers.
